Colossians 4, 1 Thessalonians 1,2

"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful." Colossians 4:2, NIV

Would you describe yourself as being devoted in prayer? Paul, through inspiration of the Holy Spirit, commands us to be just that so we certainly need to be. But very often we are not. Why is that? I think it's because when we have everything that we need, we just kind of forget about God. Then when trouble comes along, our prayers are disjointed, repetitive and worried.

It's like when or first child was sick and in the hospital at about two years of age. I would pray to God that He would take care of him. Then, a few minutes later, I would be saying the same prayer. Then a few minutes later, and a few minutes later, and a few minutes later I found myself praying the same prayer again.

Then, I caught myself! Who did I think that I was praying to? If I truly believed that I had an audience with the Creator - the One Being who could just speak and my son be well - then I wouldn't be so frantic, so confused, and so repetitive.

Another thing that was needed was a consistent prayer life. At the time, I could hardly describe my prayer life as devoted, much less as watchful and thankful. So I changed. I became more alert as to my need for prayer in good times and in bad. I was more watchful as to things needing God's attention.

And what I now consider to be the most important change is that I became thankful when I prayed. Have you ever noticed how calming thankfulness can be? I think the reason is that when we thank God for everything that He has done for us, that it makes us realize that He has never let us down before - and He never will. So when we start praying regularly when times are good, it makes it all the more comfortable to pray to God when times are bad. When we add the all-important ingredient of thankfulness, our prayer life becomes transformed into something that God is pleased with.

Prayer is powerful! When you add thanksgiving to prayer, it produces a peace in our lives that is indescribable! Are you devoted in prayer?

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:6-7, NIV

May God richly bless your studies as you seek to devote every part of your life to Him and His Son!
