Romans 10,11

"So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ."  Romans 10:17, RSV

Faith may be one of the most widely misunderstood concepts in all of Christianity, yet very, very few people give the source of faith much thought.

Many treat faith like my Aunt Gladys used to treat superstitions. For example, you did go down a road where a black cat had just crossed. Why? Because a black cat crossing your path was bad luck. Why? It just was! Everyone knew that, so it must be so. And, when it came to black cats and path crossings, you believed what you believed and it was as simple as that.

I suppose it doesn't matter a hill of beans what your doctrinal beliefs are in regards to black cats and paths.

But faith cannot be treated that way! Many people think that faith is something that you just cannot do anything about. You just believe what you believe and it's as simple as that.

Faith is not to be approached in such a casual or superstitious way! Faith is one of the key aspects of salvation. Faith will direct your life! Faith, according to Romans 10:17 is not something that just happens. It is a direct result of an educated pursuit of the truth, and that truth can only be found in the teachings of Christ

As a matter of fact, that is what the New Testament is: It is the collection of the apostles inspired writings of everything that Jesus wanted His church taught. When boiled down to its essence, this is the reason that you are studying the Word of God - you want to find out everything that Jesus has commanded!

"And Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."                  Matthew 28:18-20, RSV
