John 5-7

Jesus answered, "My teaching is not My own. It comes from the Father who sent Me. If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether My teaching comes from God or whether I speak on My own."  John 7:16-17, NIV

I love this passage! It reminds us that we can know what we need to know. Jesus said that if we choose to God's will that we can find out whether His teaching comes from God or not.

This gives us a foundation for our study: We can know! Finding God's will then becomes something that is assured, rather than something that may or may not be achievable.

I found this secret out when I was, of all things, taking a course called "Multiple Linear Regression Analysis". I had to have this course in order to get my degree in finance, but it was hard. So hard, in fact, that the first time I took it I dropped it after the first class. I then proceeded to nearly finish my degree, taking all of the other hard classes, but I still had Multiple Linear Regression Analysis looming over the horizon. It was stupid to keep putting it off, because without this course I might have just as well not taken the others.

So I took it. I studied hard, I read the material, I studied some more and I took the test. And do you know what?

I got a 46.

Out of 100.

I had wasted two years of my life. I was ready to give up! I had done my best and it was a 46!

Then, I caught myself. Multiple Linear Regressions Analysis was math, so it had a right answer. So instead of treating the class like it was some great mystery, I just went back to the beginning and step by step taught myself how to do this type of math. The secret was in understanding that it could be done. Since it could be done, and since other people were figuring it out, then I could do it. So I did it, and I ended up with the most beautiful grade of "B" that I ever did see.

And I was free forever from my fear of this mysterious subject that had terrorized my life for so long!

Since that time, I have noticed that a lot of people treat the Bible like I approached Multiple Linear Regression Analysis. They convince themselves that it is too hard to do... so they don't! But Jesus said if we choose to do God's will that we can find out about His words.

The only question now is "do we want to do God's will?"

Do you?

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free?" John 8:32, NIV

It doesn't seem nearly so bad, now that you are over 1/4 finished and now that the chapters are actually getting shorter.
