Luke 8-10

While He was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher any more."

But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe and she shall be well."  Luke 8:49-50, RSV

Well, there it is... one of the most difficult things that a parent could ever hear. "Your child is dead."

Some of you have heard those terrible words, and they changed you life. Many people lose their faith at such a time - and how tragic, for the only One who can truly help is often abandoned at such low times in life.

The fact is that life comes with tests that are so difficult that we do not think we can go on. This is when we especially need to remember that when no one else can help, Jesus can! That means if we are separated from loved ones by death, that we have the hope of being reunited some day. That's one of the great benefits of being faithful: If we are faithful and if our loved ones are faithful, we will be together again for all eternity because God is faithful.

And He loves us.

There is another type of a loss that can be nearly as grievous to us as death. A son or a daughter wanders away from the faith. Despite our efforts and our pleadings and our prayers, they are lost and they just don't care. A period of years may go by where they just wander around in the world of sin. And we mourn every day of their wandering. And it tears at our hearts because we know that unless they repent of their evil lifestyle that they just have it to go through.

Perhaps this is the critical time - even more so than when death takes a loved one - that we need to remember this eternal truth: When no one else can help, Jesus can!

Then comes that fateful day when we get that call that we have been waiting for: "Mom, I have been so wrong! Can you ever forgive me?" And they come back to you! More importantly, they come back to Christ!

And you have your child back!

I know, I know! It doesn't always happen this way, but we need to understand that it always can... for when no one else can help, Jesus can!

Don't ever give up the faith!

And all were weeping and bewailing her, but He said, "Do not weep, for she is not dead, but asleep."

And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand He called her saying, "Child, arise."

And her spirit returned, and she got up at once..."  Luke 8:52-55, RSV
