Matthew 16-18

"I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."  Matthew 17:20, NIV

Do you really believe that? Do you believe that if you have even a small amount of faith that you could move mountains?

I used to struggle with this verse because not only had I never moved a mountain by faith, I had never seen anyone else move a mountain by faith... or had I?

You see, the words of God and Christ are rarely meant to stand alone. By that I mean that, just like a good cook's recipe for tasty chocolate pie has more than one ingredient, God's teaching often has much more than just one element to it. Take prayer for example. We are told in Scripture that if we believe when we ask that we will receive whatever we ask for in prayer (Mark 11:24). But, we are also told that we must not doubt when we ask (James 1:5-8), and that we must pray according to God's will (Matthew 6:10, Matthew 26:42, I John 5:14).

In other words, don't be praying to God to move a mountain for you so that you can impress people with your parlor trick religion, because God is not going to answer any prayer in the affirmative that is not according to His will. But...

How many times have we had seemingly insurmountable problems to deal with? Perhaps a loved one was at death's door. Perhaps we had lost a job and didn't know how we could pay our bills, or maybe we had let someone down whom we loved and thought we were going to lose them? And we prayed to God, in faith and according to His will to take care of our situation - to effectively remove these mountains of fear and anxiety and worry that were crushing our very being and -

He did in fact move those mountains! Maybe not in the way that we expected (or even wanted) but He did move those mountains in the most perfect way possible!

God can and will move mountains in our lives if we will just approach Him in the right way - even if we only have the faith the size of a mustard seed to bring before Him.

He has moved mountains in the lives of countless men and women of faith, and He will do the same for you. But, as you will find in this study, you must be in Christ (or at least doing your best to be going in that direction), you must ask according to His will, and you must have faith!

Let's face it: You probably will never have a reason to ask God to move a physical mountain from here to there, so there will likely never be a time in your life where you need to make such a request. But you will have mountains in your life - crushing, seemingly insurmountable burdens that will weigh you down - and you will need to ask God to move those mountains for you. And He will move whatever mountain that has been ruling your life, if you will let Him and if you have faith.

Do you... have even a mustard's seed worth of faith?
