2 Corinthians 2-10

He answered, "It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."

Matthew 4:4, RSV

We all know this verse. We have probably quoted it many times: "Man shall not live by bread alone." But how many times have we paused to consider the responsibility placed on us by the last part of the quote: "but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."

Indeed, this truth had been stated many years prior to Jesus quoting it, for it was originally Moses whom God used to reveal this important principle nearly 1500 years before Jesus used it to defend Himself from temptation.

This passage is one of the keys that has motivated me to study the Bible every day for over thirty years. Why, you might wonder? It is because I realized that if Jesus said that man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, then I was going to have to find out what God had commanded. How can we live by that which we do not know, and how can we know that which we have not read?

This simple logic allows us to readily see that if we are to live by every word of God, then we are going to have to read every word of God.

And, if you have taken up the challenge to read the Bible, then that is exactly what you are doing. Well done!

Today is day 20 of the Thirty Day Bible Challenge, with the readings of II Corinthians 2 through 10. Once you have read those chapters you will be 2/3rds of the way through the New Testament. What a great beginning! Now, finish strong!
